JAMAICAN HURRICANE DAMAGE

On October 28, 2025, a Category 5 hurricane went through the Caribbean Islands, creating a tremendous amount of damage to property and a significant loss of life. The storm came inland at the southern coast of Jamaica and proceeded north on the western side of the island. Although there were many conversations with our leaders prior to the storm, the severe winds knocked out the telecommunications systems, making cell phone and even internet communications nearly impossible afterward. We experienced a couple of days when we were unable to verify the conditions on the ground, but Bishop Antonio Erskine was able to reach our offices and provide an accurate report, and has continued to do so throughout the ordeal.

A report was developed and posted on the church website, advising those who inquired about Jamaica about the current state of affairs as we knew it. Since that time, several changes have occurred, and since there was no loss of life or serious injury to any of our saints reported, a decision was made to post only the information that we could verify with the leadership of the House of God in Jamaica. At the same time, we initiated the activation of our Foreign Mission Disaster Recovery Committee to ensure that we had a clear plan for “the way forward” once things settled down. Details of our plan to collaborate with the team in Jamaica to help restore a sense of normalcy will be shared on this site.

The House of God has a large contingent of members who share family and friends in Jamaica. Therefore, there is broad interest and concern on many levels about the physical, mental, and spiritual condition of those who were impacted. We are working diligently to make the resources of the House of God available to the saints who need assistance and to continue collaborating with community organizations that provide first responder and disaster relief services to communities worldwide.

Thanks to the many pastors, members, and heads of our internal help groups who have reached out to discover how they can help. Our chairperson for the Disaster Recovery Committee for Jamaica is Sis. Millicent Robinson, who is from Jamaica and well acquainted with our churches, the culture, and the people there. This site will be updated by her team as needed in the future.

The focus of the Disaster Recovery Committee for the Foreign Mission of the House of God is to find ways in which help can be extended to those who are the victims of a recognized disaster. Many issues arise when a disaster strikes, but calculated steps must be taken that do not hinder self-help efforts. The D.R. Committee is there to assist in restoring the normal functions that were lost, but not to enhance, improve, or lead in that effort.

Status as of November 15, 2025

DRC Committee: The Disaster Recovery Committee has been formalized in the US, and serious work has begun on assessing the damage to our member churches.  We have been able to communicate with our leaders in Jamaica and are assured that the information we are getting is accurate and timely.

Two congregations have been removed from the list of damaged churches (Mocho and Summer Hill), and no new location has been added.

Website:We are working on the website to provide many of you with access to information about conditions in Jamaica. We are very close to releasing it and expect it to answer many questions that you may have.

Infrastructure:Many areas remain without power, and the report of loss of life or serious bodily injury remains unchanged. Communications are being restored, although they remain intermittent in most places.

The Cauldwell congregation suffered more serious damage than we originally knew and is currently in dire need of a retaining wall to be built to prevent the building from falling into the river.

Immediate Need overall: We are being told that the single most crucial item that churches need to begin work is a generator. A gas generator, with a power output of less than 5000 watts, will go a long way in providing power for tools, lighting, communications, and other essential equipment.

Where are we? Our focus thus far has been on finding a way to get financial assistance to those in need. We recognize that other needs are equally important and we want to thank our members of the various professional communities who have reached out to us, looking for ways in which they can help. It is our intention to address as many
